Cadastral Maps are used to represent and define the division of real property in a specific area, such as, a country. These maps can display systematic land partitioning, like a PLSS or unsystematic, like a Metes and Bounds Survey.
The map shown is a Cadastral Map of the Provinces of the Roman Empire. The division of the Roman Empire was probably done similar to the division of property under the Metes and Bounds survey. Mountains, rivers, religion, race, and other physical or cultural features could create natural borders between the provinces. For example: The Alps create a natural border between Italia and the provinces surrounding it in the North. Judea is separated most likely for the religious and racial differences.
