Isotach

Isotachs are maps that use isolines to connect points that have the same wind speed. The term Isotach can be used interchangeably with Isoline when the map is representing wind speed.


The map shown is an Isotach Map displaying wind speeds over the North Pole. The map connects the points of equal wind speed. The lines are enhanced with different color shading. White and Purple indicate a low amount of wind speed while moving up the color spectrum to red indicates a high amount of wind speed.

Isobar

Isobars are lines used on an Isoline Map to connect points that have the same atmospheric pressure. These maps are used to show High and Low pressure systems of weather.


The map shown is an Isobar Map showing the Barometric Pressure over North America. The map connects the points of equal Atmospheric Pressure with lines. The map also shows the High (blue H) and Low (red L) pressure systems.

LIDAR

Laser-Based Imagery (LIDAR) is a form of Active Remote Sensing that uses laser lighting to speed and determine distances. Radar guns use this form of technology to determine speed.


The Images shown are created by Laser-Based Imagery (LIDAR). The one shown is the World Trade Center and the area around it; the other shows the same area after 9/11. Coloring is used to show height differences; with Blue representing the highest height and red representing the lowest height. You can see how the highest point changed after 9/11.

Doppler Radar

Doppler Radar is a form of Active Remote Sensing that emits radio or microwave radiation to determine speed and direction of objects.  The Weather Channel uses this form of radar to create weather maps shown on TV.


The map shown is a Doppler Radar image of Hurricane Wilma. Radio or Microwave radiation was emitted to determine the movement of this storm.

Black & White Aerial Photo

Black & White Aerial Photos are sensitive to Black and White light. They are similar to Infrared Aerial Photos by they show only light that we can perceive. Certain features are less distinguishable in Black & White Aerial Photos versus Infrared. Vegetation variations are easier to see with Infrared Aerial Photos.


The map shown is a Black and White Aerial Photo of San Diego. The Black and White Photo only shows light that the human eye can perceive.

Infrared Aerial Photo

Infrared Aerial Photos are sensitive to Infrared light which the human eye cannot detect. Aerial Photos are pictures taken generally, from a satellite, of the earth’s surface. Infrared Aerial photos can help show environmental changes across a large area. Generally, these Infrared Photos are called Color Infrared Aerial Photos, because we use false color to illustrate the light; it is false color, because we cannot actually see the light.


The map shown is an Infrared Aerial Photo of San Diego. The red coloring is the color added to show the Infrared light.

Cartographic Animiations

Cartographic Animations help show differences in time through an animated map. These animations can be based on time (temporal) or another basis other than time (non-temporal).Cartographic animations are similar to the mapping system The Weather Channel uses to show past weather and predicated weather; These would be temporal cartographic Animations.


The map shown is a Cartographic Animation of the Weather in the Caribbean. It would show the weather over a certain period of time (temporal) if you clicked on the link.
